Along the Douro are located several important cities in the region. Porto is the capital of Northern Portugal, and Vila Nova de Gaia. Upstream we find Entre-os-Rios and Caldas de Aregos known for its spas, Peso da Régua considered the capital of the Douro Wine Region, and the important cities of Vila Real and Lamego.
In the middle of the demarcated region, the beautiful village of Pinhão is located in the heart of the Douro, and small villages such as Tua, Pocinho (terminal station for trains on the Douro line) and Barca d’Alva at the end of the Douro waterway, next to the border with Spain.
In Internacional Douro, where the river forms the border between Portugal and Spain, you will find Freixo de Espada à Cinta and Miranda do Douro.
